During the last 25 years, Paris' Latin Quarter has lost more than half of its bookshops with the near-monopoly Amazon has had on the book market. With the threat of this monopoly, The Abbey created the Pledge of Independents to invite readers, writers, and bookshops to join the movement of supporting independent bookstores and the diversity and fair practices of the book trade.
